"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."
This quote by Nelson Madiba Mandela donned the walls of my classroom for years. Why? Because it resonated with me. Education changed the trajectory of my life 30 years ago, and I have since endeavoured to pass that passion on to others. It is the cornerstone of my teaching philosophy.
Motivation comes from knowing, deep in your gut, that you always ‘get a chance’ to improve your lot; that a ‘fair go’ is all you need to propel yourself to have ‘a crack.’
Life has handed me hard knocks as well as afforded me unique opportunities. I have worked hard and been lucky. My passion comes from these experiences – it is neve
r too late to turn it around.
I love teaching. I get to ‘pay it forward’ with the very thing that launched me on a new path. How beautiful is that?
So,
“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. Let there be work, bread, water, and salt for all. No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion.”
A chance to change. Believe this and let this be your guiding light too.
